6/15/15 - Obed Wild and Scenic River National Area, TN
We slept in late this morning because we were
tired from all the driving yesterday.
Jim made breakfast sandwiches for us this morning using Hatch green
chili sausage. Then we went to the
visitor center and picked up information on the hikes in Big South Fork
National River and Recreation Area. It
was really too late to start a hike so we decided to drive to Obed Wild and Scenic River
National Area visitor center near Wartburg, TN. On the way we stopped at historic Rugby. This town has a few building from the late
1800’s. There was an old general store
there that had homemade fried pies. We bought
peach and raspberry pies. The young
lady running it was 5th generation and her grandmother made the
fried pies. Reminded me of the apricot
fried pies mother made years ago.
At the Obed Wild and Scenic River
National Area visitor center we watched a short movie and
then drove to the campground and to the day use area where you can swim in the
Obed River. Thank goodness we had asked the
Ranger if a trailer would be able to drive it.
He told us no and we took the truck only. We were considering going back to camp there. The road getting there was narrow, steep and
winding with lots of hairpin turns. The campground sites are very small and on
a one way road with trees up to the road and sites.
There
are lots of day lilies growing along the side of the roads here like the
bluebonnets in Texas.
