Today we stopped at a historical road sign that
told about the house where James Madison was born. It is no longer there. We
drove to George Washington’s birthplace. His birthplace house is no longer there.
The park service has built a colonial home and has made a working
farm there. The original house site is
outlined with stone so you can see the floor plan. There is also a 1/10 scale version of the Washington Monument in D.C. Down the road is the Washington family cemetery. George Washington’s grandfather and father
are buried there. They used to be in
separate graves and in 1930 they were dug up and then reentered into one
grave.
I read that Maggie L. Walker
National Historic Site in Richmond wasn’t open on Monday and Tuesday so we
drove there to take a tour. Maggie L. Walker was an African American educator and businesswoman. She was the first female bank president to charter a bank in the U.S. We went on a tour of her house and then we
went to Richmond Battlefield Visitor’s center that is in the old Tredegar Iron
Works ruins. This plant manufactured trains, cannons, and ammunition for the south during the civil war. We watched a movie and
looked at the exhibits. We stopped at
Legend Brewing before returning to the Casita.
